Richmond’s popular street party has been given a new name, but the successful format of the annual family-friendly event in Sundial Square remains unchanged. The Last of the Summer Fare has been rebranded as the Summer Harvest Fare to reflect the fact that it is a celebration of the region’s harvest. But Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint says this Friday’s Sprig & Fernsponsored event will still be based around “getting together with friends and family and enjoying good music, wine, beer and food”. “Everyone always looks forward to it,” Kim says. “It’s a nice way to celebrate the harvest
and end of the summer.” Kim says live music will be provided by the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band, which will suit the “the laid back family event”. There will be a Sprig & Fern beer tent and a variety of wine and food stalls, as well as entertainment for the children. There will also be an increased security after organisers experienced problems with intoxicated youths last year, and to comply with new liquor licensing by-laws. The event will held from 5.30pm to 10pm. A doubledecker bus will be providing a free service from Richmond to Nelson, leaving Sundial Square at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm.
Man helps save business from fire ProKarts Nelson owner and Richmond man Nick Fowler could be forgiven for watching on in despair as his business went up in flames. But instead, his actions helped save a neighbouring building and thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment. Nelson fire senior officer Craig Davies says Nick was a huge help for them. “When we arrived the owner was there and he was fairly upset, but he assisted us greatly in mitigating the damage by explaining where things were. Craig says it was a difficult situation. “We were hampered by the water supply being a couple of hundred metres away and knowing there were things like fuel, tyres and karts in the building.” The neighbouring building that was saved was also used by ProKarts to store equipment. Craig says the fire is suspicious as there were three other small fires in the area, including one behind the skating rink. “We suspect arson, but we can’t confirm that yet. We have investigators there,” he says.

Walk for Water returns All of the money raised from next weekend’s Walk for Water will go towards an entire network of water bores in the African township of Torwood. After last year’s popular recreation event raised $5000, Nelson charity Water for Prosperity was able to visit Torwood and successfully install three ground water bores in the town, where its residents previously had to walk for hours just to access clean water. “These bores will be the main source of water for these people,” says Matt McDowell of Water for Prosperity. “The residents of Torwood are just over the moon with the support they’re getting from Nelson.”
The charity was setup by Gideon Matorino and Matt last year. Gideon had initially experienced the water shortage first hand in 2012 when he and his family visited the town. There was no water to any houses during the first week. The Walk for Water event will be held on Sunday March 30. Participants can either walk, run or bike from the ASB Aquatic Centre, along the Great Taste Cycle Trail to the finish line on Rabbit Island, where there is a free ride on the double decker bus back to Richmond. There will be a barbecue, bouncy maze and spot prizes. This year there will be a staggered start, with walkers com-
mencing at 8:30am, runners at 9am, and cyclists at 9:30am. It is expected to take walkers three hours to complete the journey and Matt was encouraging business teams to get behind the event, as they did last year. “Last year’s event was great fun and everyone had a good time. We had a lot of business teams in there last year and hopefully they’ll come again. It’s a nice, safe journey, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants to check out the cycle trail. We’ll have water stations and toilets along the way.” Donations will be collected at the end, and sponsorship forms can be obtained by visiting Matt McDowell and Gideon Matorino of Nelson charity Water for www.waterforprosperity.org. Rain from Cyclone Lusi has let farmers across the Tasman district “off the hook”, ending a long dry spell that was rapidly worsening into an autumn drought. The first significant rainfall for 35 days fell across the district at the weekend when Cyclone Lusi delivered a timely 70 to 90mm. It was the second consecutive year that rain has come just in time to prevent an autumn drought, and Eighty-eight Valley sheep and beef farmer Ian Parkes says the weekend’s rain was “perfect”. “It’s let us off the hook,” Ian says. “We were getting very dry in the last two weeks so it came just in time.” Ian says they had started feeding out “three trailer loads of silage a day” to keep ewes in top condition after pastures had dried up over the last two weeks. The farm’s dam was also drying up and only had three weeks of water left for irrigation before the rain. Irrigators on the Waimea Plains also received a reprieve, with the Tasman District Council’s Dry Weather Taskforce lifting all water restrictions in rural and urban areas on Monday. The taskforce had already enforced stage two restrictions, or a 35 per cent cut to the water take, and was preparing to go to stage three, a 50 per cent cut,

Sunday’s rain came at almost exactly the same time as the heavy rain that broke the autumn drought last year, when 84mm fell on March 18. Cyclone Lusi wasn’t all good news with the high winds damaging a small number of apple trees on the Waimea Plains. Wai-west Horticulture operations general manger Alan Dobbie says they had two rows of “heavily laden apple trees” blown over by the winds which hit on Sunday. “We came out of it pretty well though, considering the winds that were forecast.”

Richmond’s newest retail park There has been a “better than expected” response from businesses looking to lease premises in a new bulk retail centre near Richmond, after plans for the Field Junction Retail Park were released earlier this month. Plans for the 5.5 hectare development, which were posted on the Bayleys Nelson website on March 7, feature 13 premises ranging from 500 to 5000 square metres and 547 car parks. The site at 405 Lower Queen Street is owned by McShanes Holding, a company owned by the Field family, Alan, Peter and Phillip, who previously ran Berryfields. Project sales leader Iain MacFadyen says they have already been contacted by a number of businesses interested in leasing premises including some “big players” as well as some that would be new to the Nelson-Tasman region. “We have had a better than expected result

Iain says the retail park will service the extensive residential subdivisions planned for Richmond West as well as the wider Nelson-Tasman region. The developers are also preparing concept plans for a business park adjacent to the retail park while there is a large residential subdivision immediately to the east which could have up to 500 sections. Iain says it is too early to put a time frame on the development, although he hopes that the first steps of securing sufficient interest in the leases and producing detailed plans so it can go to the resource consent stage, “will happen as soon as possible”.
TROLLEY DERBY: There were plenty of spills and plenty of smiles at the weekend’s Robertson’s Trolley Derby, which has been labelled another success by its organisers. There seemed to be more crashes at this year’s event, with the wind playing havoc with some of the young drivers. But there were no serious accidents, and the weather didn’t deter the drivers in the Monarch of the Hill event, with eventual winner Gordon Dacombe clocking 71km/h in his Aussie Flash trolley. It could be curtains for Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre
If the cost to bring the Trafalgar Centre’s foundations up to standard remains at more than $20 million, then expect to see the building bulldozed. Nelson City Council closed the city’s only major events’ centre in December and last week released previously confidential reports to the public. Those reports showed how the centre would likely fail in a significant earthquake, as the northern end of the centre is built on poor soil. To fix the problem could cost up to $27 million according to one of the reports, and lawyers’ advice said the council should close the facility as they
would be liable under the health and safety act if people died. But some of the information in one of the reports was questioned by members of the public, including how deep the foundations were. Official advice was three metres, but resident Kerry Neal found an old newspaper clipping that reported the foundations were ten metres deep. That forced councillors to tell engineers to pay a visit to the centre and find out exactly how deep they were. But Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says even if the foundations are deeper it doesn’t change the risk, as it’s the sideways move-

If that can’t happen, she says the likely preference would be to pull it down and rebuild it with Rutherford Park still the most likely location. “It could be that we turn a new building around or put it elsewhere on Rutherford Park, there’s a big area there so there are options.” She said there were other sites closer to the CBD but those wouldn’t be explored until the Trafalgar Centre had been completely written off. She said the council hopes to have all the information it requires to make a final decision by mid-June “at the absolute latest”.

Dumped carcasses disgust police
The discovery of dumped sheep carcasses, maggot-infested fish remains and other rubbish is “disturbing” and “lazy”, according to the constable who found them near the road side. Nyanne Graf-Pollard made the gross discovery when attending the scene of a historic car accident on the Moutere Highway, just after lunch on Thursday. While the forensic photographer photographed the scene, Nyanne took a stroll down the road to “get out the way”. On her brief walk, she came across “at least six” dead carcasses, rotting fish, and dumped household waste
near Bisley Rd, a gravel forestry road. “I found the ribcage and bones of other animals down the bank, but there are at least six dead animals. The smell was pretty disgusting,” says Nyanne. A spokesperson from Tasman District Council says this offence is serious for a number of reasons. If the offender is found, they could receive a $400 fine. “It is serious for a number of reasons not the least being rubbish, health issues and whatever could be within the rubbish – it can be hazardous as well as not being a very nice experience for those who come

says they were obviously just too lazy to dispose of it legally. She wouldn’t rule out the possibility that the animals had been poached and left on the site, which was part of a forestry block. An enquiry would be made into who dumped the waste and why, and Nyanne hopes someone will know the offender and report it. “If they know or see this happen in the future they need to come forward.” Tasman District Council dispatched contractors to clean up and dispose of the mess late last week.
Giant egg ‘like four in one’
Nina Morris collects hundreds of eggs from her chickens every year, but she New Home Show Home got a big shock last week when one of them laid an egg “four times” the size of a regular one. The Ruby Bay woman found the egg in one of the nest boxes at her free range chicken farm, which perhaps ruled out the possibility of it coming from another animal. She measured it and says the circumference was 19cm. “I just thought ‘my gosh’. I’ve had big eggs but not like that,” she says. “That’s just absolutely massive. It has come to our attention that there has been a resurgence in idiotic driving by a small group of drivers in our area. I’m talking about the young guns in souped up cars who in an attempt to impress their friends by taking enormous risks to leave a good portion of their tyres on the tarmac. You may have picked by my tone that I for one am not impressed. You may remember we made a big impact on this small sector of our community a couple of years ago when we targeted their behaviour with an operation which resulted in 12 cars being impounded. Well, the next lot have emerged. These oafs seem to target blind corners to do burnouts where there’s an incredibly high risk of an innocent member of the public being caught up in their mess. A number of people have reported this behaviour to us and I’d urge everyone to keep an eye out. If you see anyone driving in an irresponsible way call police immediately. Please don’t wait until you get home as any delay reduces our chances of finding them. If possible get the registration plate and a description of the vehicle. Also note down the time and the place the incident has occurred. If we can catch up with these people they’re likely to face prosecution and worse still, have their vehicle impounded. Parents should take note too, if you’re letting someone use your car and they get involved in dangerous antics we’ll be impounding the car they were driving, regardless of who the registered owner is. Our intention in the coming weeks is to target this sort of behaviour as we did back in May 2012. I don’t want any innocent motorists sharing the road with people who behave in a deliberately dangerous manner. Rest assured we will be doing our level best to stamp this out again.

As far as work places go, Ali Slotemaker’s would be one of the most tranquil. She spends her work day making coffees in the summer setting of Rabbit Island. But this weekend she will leave the container-turned coffee shop behind to compete in the stressful, competitive environment of the New Zealand Barista Championship in Wellington – something Ali admits will certainly take her out of her comfort zone. Her signature drink is yet to be finalised, but early ideas included strawberry aromas or the utilisation of hops. “You can really use anything you like but we haven’t quite got ours set, we’re still playing around with ideas. Our coffee we’ve chosen will hopefully showcase strawberry aromatics. But I guess it’s a matter of watch this space.” Ali has been a barista for the past ten-plus years, and just
recently started Rabbit Island Coffee Co with her husband Stephen Lee. “Like a lot of baristas it was a part-time job to get through uni. I guess that’s the usual story. But it gets in your blood and it’s pretty hard to put it down. It’s a great culture and it’s an industry now and that’s why I stayed in it,” she says, having also spent a brief period as an environmental planner. Because she will be the sole Nelson barista at the competition, Ali was looking forward to the prospect of representing the region. “It would’ve been nicer to have a friend from Nelson but it’s okay. We’ll just go on our lonesome and see what we can do.”

Wakefield’s first Queen Scout for 30-plus years Jessie Johnston Teenager Todd Tudor has become the first person from Wakefield to earn the Queen Scout award in more than 30 years. The Queen Scout Award is the highest award given in the Scouts Association, and is also one of the most recognisable youth awards in New Zealand. It takes years to complete and includes activities surrounding the community, the outdoors, personal development and new experiences. Todd completed his work towards the award this year and will attend a ceremony in Christchurch where a certificate signed by the Queen will be presented by the GovernorGeneral. “I saw it as a personal achievement that represented everything I had done in Scouting,” says Todd. “I particularly enjoyed the tramp but the profound sense of accom-
plishment at the end of it all, once I gained the award, gave the most satisfaction.” Todd’s achievement has also benefited his village, with one of his tasks a 20 hour service project he dedicated to building Wakefield a community notice board, which was unveiled last week. Venturers’ leader, Sarah Arnold expressed her excitement at the achievement. “I’m extremely proud of him. He’s got a strong character and is a really good person. The standard of character that they expect in a Queen Scout, I think Todd has in abundance. What he’s done overall is set a very high benchmark for the Venturers’ that will follow him for their Queen Scout.” Although Todd is the first person from Wakefield in decades to gain the award, there have been half a dozen Nelsonians earn it over the past few years.

Legal highs are bad for young people: People smoke legal highs to look cool in front of their friends. Lots of young people smoke legal highs to trip out [hallucinate] they see things that people don’t believe in. By doing this it excites them, which is why people do legal highs. Young people access legal highs by asking homeless people to buy it for them. They buy it from [retailers]. Some places are still easy to access for young people if you look old enough. They even ask family members to access it for them. People under 18 can get it easy. It’s really addictive for anyone but especially young people. I’ve seen young people who haven’t had it in a while and are quick to anger. Most of my friends are addicted to legal highs. As a young person like myself I wonder why people do legal high. It just makes them look like druggies and makes them do idiotic stuff that they don’t usually do and makes them vomit all over the place. The mood they get depends on how they are feeling. If they’re feeling down they would have a down buzz or if they’re happy they would get a happy buzz but most of the time you get a down buzz. Legal highs should be banned for life. The government should get rid of the horse tranquiliser and the chemicals that disturbs our health. Whetu Wade, Youth Nelson student.

Garin students wins speech comp Council cuts A speech about young farmhand Edward Fitzgerald has won a Garin College student a place in the national final of the ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition. Emily O’Connell won the Nelson, Marlborough and Westland regional final with a speech entitled “Uncle Eddy”, a passionate recollection of her great, great uncle’s involvement in the Battle of Passchendaele and his tragic death along with 2700 other New Zealand men who died in 1917, a day described as “New Zealand’s Blackest Day”. The 17-year-old student will go on to compete against seven other Year 12 and 13 regional finalists at the national final in Wellington on April 4, with the
overall winner travelling to Gallipoli for 2014 Anzac day commemorations. Nelson RSA district president Derek Nees says there had been a fantastic level of interest in the competition, which began in 2010. “Over the past four years we’ve been privileged to see some incredible young New Zealanders pay tribute to those who have served this country in conflicts overseas,” he says. “This year we’re hugely impressed by the standard of the entries. It’s heartening to see the legacy of the Anzacs is in such good hands.” The competition is a partnership between the RSA and ANZ to promote a deeper understanding and apprecia-

Tasman district mayor Richard Kempthorne is expecting “quite a few” public submissions on funding cuts to key projects after council adopted a no-frills draft annual plan last week. The council has been focusing on reducing its debt and rates increases and last Thursday adopted a draft annual plan that will reduce debt by up to $16 million by the end of the financial year and result in a general rates increase of 1.56 per cent. Richard says they “had to be prepared to take the hard decisions and prioritise” to achieve those goals but conceded not everyone will be happy. “It’s a continual balancing act between what services do you provide and what don’t you provide to keep costs down and they are often not simple choices,” he says. Richard says the general rates increase of 1.56 per cent, along with targeted rates, will mean a typical residential house in Richmond valued at $485,000 faces a rates increase of 3.37 percent or $98.52. A Brightwater home valued at $360,000 will face a 3.24 per cent or $87.51 increase in rates while a Waimea Village property valued at $185,000 faces an increase of 3.53 per cent or $69.24. Public meetings and presentations on the draft annual plan will be held in the Murchison Sport Recreation and Cultural Centre from 3pm to 4pm on March 24, Tapawera Community Centre at 7pm on March 24, Brightwater School Hall at 7.30pm on April 1, Wakefield Village Hall from 4.30pm to 5.30pm and the Wakefield Worship Centre at 7.30pm on April 8, and at council offices in Richmond from 4.30pm to 5.30pm and at 7.30pm on April 9.

However it doesn’t come as a shock to most as power prices are rising every year now and there is almost an attitude of “grin and bear it” starting to prevail among consumers. Although these latest increases might seem to many to be small they still represent a line charge increase of between 3 per cent and 8 per cent and for those older people struggling to keep their heads above water this can be Grey Power appropriately called cold Nelson president comfort. Obviously the national grid and local networks must remain reliable but at what cost? The inside of the Stoke Memorial Hall will replicate a miniature railway town this weekend, with the sixth Nelson Model Railway Exhibition taking place on Saturday and Sunday. The show, which is held biennially, will feature nine layouts covering most of the building. Just three of the exhibitors will be from Nelson, with most coming from Christchurch including one layout, made to look like the Hornby Station, which is 15 metres long. “It takes up a fair chunk of the hall,” organiser Ian McEwan jokes. “The other ones are a bit smaller.” The show runs from 10am until 5pm both days and entry is $5 for an adult, $2 for a child or $10 for a family, which includes two adults and three children.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Fergus O’Connor has quite literally spent most of his life on the farm – and he’d happily do it all over again if he had the opportunity. The 88 year old is well known for his horses – most notably his Clydesdales – so it’s no surprise that most of his stories include a horse somewhere along the line. There was the tale of the first family car which was only bought because the gig horse got caught in the bog. Another of carting milk to the factory on McShane’s Rd, and even judging Clydesdales at a show over in Melbourne. But it was a history of horsemen in the O’Connor family which initially caught Fergus’ attention and it’s an interest he still has today. “Dad was always talking about good horses and good horsemen,” he says. “Through the 1860s and 1870s members of the family were all able to ride the horses without bridle or saddle. That culminated in uncle Frank riding one good horse over the jumps at the Nelson Show in 1901 without bridle or saddle. “So naturally, with all that talk around the place, I was intrigued and I wanted to be a horseman too.” Fergus was born in a nursing home on Gladstone Rd in Richmond. He remembers himself as a three year old running around chasing the horses on the farm, but it wasn’t until he turned ten years old that he finally learnt how to ride one. Fergus, who was one of eight children, attended Appleby School, and then went to Nelson College for a further four years. He used to bike to Appleby Station and then catch the train into town before school. Fergus was 15 years old when he left Nelson College to work on the family dairy farm, and a year later he had caught a whiff of the tomato boom and started growing his own. “That gave me a direct business interest as well as doing all of the other
farm work; milking cows and working horses, which was all part of the life. But there was good money in the tomatoes, it was a real boom.” By 1949, Fergus and his brother Roddy bought the farm off the family. He married Beth Pearce in Nelson about ten years later, and together they have five children. He is now a grandfather and a greatgrandfather, and officially retired from the farm just over a year ago. “I’m still the owner, but I’ve been physically out of it for about 18 months.” But when asked what the highlight has been over the past 88 years, Fergus couldn’t find one answer, he just replies. “I’d do it all over again. I just liked riding horses. As I said, dad always talked about good horsemen and I got hooked trying to become one.”

Just a thought... During the last month I have attended two significant events in the life of my family. Both were in Rangiora. The first was my brother’s funeral. Lawrence was my only brother and the first of my five siblings to die. He was a good guy, a man who lived for his family, and his smiling face will be missed so much from our family circle. But he had been unwell for over a year and to see him so poorly at the finish was
very distressing. So my brother’s funeral, though sad, was a service of celebration and thanksgiving for a life well lived and for a special man now at peace. Less than a fortnight later I went to the first official family reunion ever held for the descendants of my mother’s parents, William and Evaline Taylor. ‘Pop’ and ‘Nana’ Taylor lived in Westport and raised eight children of whom my mother Doris was the eldest. Our annual Havelock Family Weekend Snapper Challenge is always a highlight on the club calendar. With the weather having settled down over the last few weeks, the mere thought of Kenepuru firing on all cylinders had most people predicting that it would be very competitive outing. Most families of fishers arrived early Friday evening and made their way into the Kenepuru. Fishing on an incoming tide as the light changes is normally a good recipe for snapper. But for some reason they still seemed a little reluctant to come on the bite. The 10 knot wind was fickle and for a while had the boats facing the wrong direction in relation to the tide. Although the wind stayed through most of the night, the congregation of boats still enjoyed a
many cousins to catch up with and many memories to share of a great family who loved each other dearly, and have bequeathed to their descendants a rich heritage of family values, of faith in God, of church, and music. But they also had sad times to deal with; the third born died tragically at the age of only 22 years, an event which must have caused deep grief. They got through this experience I am sure because

Surprisingly, there had been a quite a few fish caught of various sizes, which would make the average snapper weight interesting. The ladies section was won by Marilyn Connolly with a 49cm fish. The men’s senior section and overall senior champion was won by Olly McPherson with a fish measuring 78.5 cm. The overall longest snapper and junior champion was Kaleb McKay with an awesome 79cm snapper, which equated to about 20lb.

The social side to outdoor bowls The “Burglars” were one of twelve social bowls teams that have been playing a series of games over ten weeks with an emphasis on having fun, hence the costumes worn for the last game. This was organised for
three reasons, firstly to introduce the game of Outdoor Bowls to potential new players, secondly to assist with the promotion of the newly built outdoor, all weather green in a second to none environment
and thirdly to show that there is a great social side to outdoor bowls. Should any one wish to take part they should enquire on 544 8060 early as the last series was overbooked and many missed out.
The card section has been very busy with Euchre on Friday and Crib and 500 Hundred on Sunday. A team of eight went to Oamaru after a night spent in Ashburton. On Saturday a game of Euchre was played with 194 people in the field. This was won by Lyn Armstrong. Well done Lyn. Sunday the South Island Euchre Tournament was held although we didn’t do so well, the club was very
well presented. This Sunday we held the Warwick McDonald Cup which involves 36 games of Euchre and was won by Lyn Armstrong, with Anne Goodman second, Monica third and Mary Palmer missed out on a count back. The card section is a good place to meet other people and have a great time. We would welcome anyone who would like to join us.

CUS ON WAKEFIELD Wakefield Bowling Club has had a very successful few weeks, especially our women players. Wakefield teams have won the Nelson Women’s Junior Pairs Champion of Champions and the Women’s Fours Champion of Champions. Linda Sisterson and Diane Holland won the Junior Pairs. They played off in a knockout competition against the champions from all the other Nelson clubs on Sunday 9 March. This is the third year in succession that Wakefield has won the Women’s Junior Pairs Champion of Champions. The Wakefield Women’s Club Champion 4s team of Lesley Morris, Wendy Mills-Ramage, Adrienne Waters and Carolyn Mason played in, and won, the Champion of Champion Fours on Saturday 15 March. Wakefield School Wakefield School’s Enviro Committee Paige Gallacher - Year 5 “Kaitiaki” is a Maori word that means “guardians”. Could we become better kaitiaki of our resources? This is Wakefield School’s new Enviro Committee’s challenge. Students from year 5 and 6 make up the Enviro Committee with our teacher, Isobel. Our job is to make our school environment a better place. We meet every week with ideas about how to do that. The first job we did was a rubbish audit with Adie Leng, from the Tasman District Council. We asked our caretaker, Bruce, to keep all the rubbish from three days. Then we put our gloves on and sorted it into what could be recycled and what would go in the landfill. There was 36kg of recycling and 24kg of landfill! We found things that could have been recycled. We found a

Wakefield School Tent City Tara Cooney - Year 5 Wakefield School’s Totara Syndicate (years 3, 4, 5 and 6) had a great experience at “Tent City” on the 13th and 14th of March. We all slept overnight on the Wakefield School back field, in tents which we put up ourselves. The back field looked like a sea of multi-coloured dome shaped
tents. When the tents were up and we had organised our gear there were lots of exciting, challenging things organised to do. We could ride our wheels around the school court or have sock and pillow fights or walk up to the Wakefield look–out. Then all the hungry children lined up to get a delicious meal of burgers, sausages and chips. Finally, after a movie, we all stumbled sleepily to our tents and tried to get some sleep. When we woke up there were lots of smiling but tired faces. Thanks to all the Totara Syndicate teachers for all the fun we had. I had never been camping before and even though I didn’t get much sleep I would love to go again.

Moutere Hills Community Centre (MHCC) celebrated their official re-opening on Saturday following two devastating fires last year. Mayor Richard Kempthorne formalised proceedings by cutting the ribbon and the community was invited to join in the special occasion and view the improvements made since the fire. The Moutere Hills Community Centre provides a hub for the local community with a mission to provide and promote recreational, social and cultural services by offering an accessible and affordable centre for use by the Tasman region at large. In January 2013 the centre was devastated by a fire forcing closure. Just less than three months later, after the clean up and part of the rebuild had started, a second fire laid waste to hundreds of volunteer hours dedicated to getting the centre up and running. The community rallied around again with Upper Moutere School, Motueka Recreational Centre and the local church providing space so they could continue to operate, running as many activities as possible. The old changing rooms were renovated through funds from the Canterbury Community Trust, the Sarau Trust and local businesses and was used as a base to keep the rugby, football and netball sports running for the season. Although the fire was disastrous, it gave them an opportunity to consult with user groups and clubs about what they needed for the future. Community fundraising

through a quiz evening, an auction and a dinner raised an impressive $20,000 and, together with funding from TDC, they were able to make several positive upgrades to support the clubs, user groups and general community into the future. “IMB construction and their team of contractors have been absolutely fantastic. The foremen Chris and Richard were amazing. They understood the importance of the facility to the community and put in the effort to get it operational as soon as they could,” says Katrina McLean, Facility Manager for the centre. “We are extremely excited about the renovations and all that we have managed to achieve and are now looking forward to the new projects of developing the fitness centre and the redevelopment of some of the outdoor space to include a community recreation area,” says Katrina. The centre has been up and running for a couple of months now, to the delight of local user groups. Three weddings have already been held with more booked in. The official re-opening on Saturday was a great moment for those in the community and those involved in the rebuild. “Today provides such an amazing feeling because, thinking back, the first fire was hard to deal with but you could sort of pull yourself together and keep going. The second fire was just such a kick in the guts and it was probably harder to deal with. It’s just so good to see the amazing effort that the whole community

censed bar plus a BYO option, a commercial kitchen and a purpose built stage with sound and lighting systems. Considering how popular our beaches are and the fact that cricket is our summer sport, it makes sense to combine the two. Nelson Cricket will launch its inaugural beach cricket tournament this Sunday at Tahunanui Beach, and there’s a good chance it will feature again as a fan activity during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. Organiser Jon Routhan says the idea has been in the pipeline for quite a while. “Council are really keen to get behind it, with an eye to do doing more when the world cup starts,” he says. “I think that’s key and they’ve been really accommodating. Yes, it is a new event, but it’s something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.” This Sunday’s event begins at 9am and features teams of six. The rules are very similar to regular cricket,

although each innings lasts just six overs. Each player must bowl one over and if you’re caught out you lose five runs, a one-handed catch loses you seven. Already a mixture of senior cricket teams, high school students and casual teams have registered, and more are welcome by visiting the Nelson Cricket Facebook page. “The whole idea is to get as many levels of cricketers playing together. I think that’s key. We’ve got three senior teams, some from the presidents grade and a few from the college grade but we’ve got casual ones and I think it’s going to be a really fun day.” A “massive piece of artificial grass” will be laid down as the wicket, with a picket fence running around the boundary. “Entry is free, the barbecue is free, people can bring picnics down and there are heaps of giveaways for best dressed.”

Waimea girls secure top seed for nationals
Nelson College boys and Waimea College girls will head to this weekend’s New Zealand Secondary School Volleyball Championship as top seeds from the region, after taking out the Tasman Championship. Held at Saxton Stadium on both Saturday and Sunday, the Tasman Secondary School Championship saw all 12 teams compete, hoping to qualify for division one, and to decide their seeding for the national championship. Nelson College reversed their disappointing result at a recent Blenheim tournament, and also the South Island Secondary Championship final, by beating Waimea College in a five set thriller, to secure the top seed. Waimea College and Nayland College will still compete in the top tier of the competition, landing the final two seeding spots. In the girls draw, five teams will be placed in the top tier, including regional winners Waimea College, who also won the South Island championship. Waimea won important games against Marlborough Girls College and Nelson College for Girls on the weekend. Waimea College Green, which is essentially their B team, and Nayland College, claimed the final division one spots.

Boys Secondary School Softball Waimea College
The Waimea College boys’ softball team will next week compete in their fourth South Island Secondary Schools tournament which takes place in Blenheim starting on 25 March. The team’s confidence is high leading into this year’s competition and they are looking forward to finishing high in their division two grade. So far the boys have consistently finished inside of the top four and with the skill set possessed by the
team it is hopeful that they will be able to at least replicate this result. The Waimea College team has a lot going for it skill wise with a core of older and more experienced boys from year 12 and 13 being joined by a very talented bunch of younger guys coming through, three of whom have already been chosen to represent the Under 15 International Softball Federation team. With this mixture of talent coach
Roger Thorn feels very confident that his team will perform well in the Secondary School’s competition and believes the boys should too. “There are enough softball skills amongst the squad to compete with anything that we might come up against. The boys just need to get in the right mindset once they get to Blenheim and continue to do what they have been doing for the last six months.” Many members of the team have
experience playing at National age grade level and Senior Intercity level although they have not played together much as a team. The squad is made up of a number of players from four different teams and it will be important for them to learn to work together very quickly. They have been working hard in training sessions in preparation for this competition and are showing great potential. In the last two years Waimea
College teams have had to travel significant distances to the yearly competition, with a trip to Alexandra in 2012 and last March they went all the way to Invercargill. This year they will be looking forward to the much easier hour and a half drive over the hill to Blenheim. Being so close to home means that they will arrive relaxed and raring to go and also makes it easier for parents and supporters to come along and cheer them on.

Draft Annual Plan 2014/2015 Tasman District Council’s Draft Annual Plan 2014/2015 is now available for public consultation. The Draft Annual Plan covers the year from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015. The purpose of the Draft Annual Plan is to get feedback on whether you think the Council is planning to provide the right services and activities within the Tasman District. Your views will help guide the Council’s decision-making, prior to the final Annual Plan being adopted in June 2014. The Council approved the Draft Annual Plan for public consultation at it’s meeting on 13 March 2014. The Draft Annual Plan comprises two documents: • A Summary, which will be sent to all households in the Tasman District through a special edition of Newsline on 21 March 2014. • The Draft Annual Plan containing the key changes the Council is planning from the proposals in the Long Term Plan for the 2014/2015 year, the services the Council is planning to provide, the costs of the services and how the services will be funded. The Council has also produced the “17 Settlements” document as supplementary information to the Draft Annual Plan. The 17 Settlements document outlines what new projects and activities are being provided by ward and settlement within the District. The Draft Annual Plan is a large document and the Council encourages people to view it electronically to minimise production costs. It is available on compact disk from Council Service Centres or libraries and can be downloaded from the website.
